Or should I say, an evening at the Blackmarket… Blackmarket Bakery, that is.
A week or two ago Chef Rachel from the Blackmarket Bakery in Irvine, asked me if I wanted to participate in a Food Blogger Focus Group. To get some feedback on her new Cake Decorating Concept.

Did someone say Cake?

It was an offer I simply couldn’t refuse. So after a long day at work, I made the “sacrifice” and drove to Rachel’s bakery, where a little less than a dozen bloggers myself included sat down and listened to Rachel explain her thoughts on her new ‘do it yourself cake decorating’ concept.

Once she explained every detail of her concept she asked for our opinion and suggestions on her very well thought out plan.

We then broke out into teams of two, and each team was given a blank canvas to decorate. It just so happened that said blank canvas consisted of a two layer cake.
She had both buttermilk (vanilla) and chocolate cakes for us to choose from that evening. She handed them over to us already professionally frosted by her of course, and if we wanted a border all we had to do was ask her assistant decorator to pipe it for us, so we could fully test her concept first-hand.
My cake decorating teammate was the lovely Kim from Rustic Garden Bistro. We had a great time decorating this Valentine’s Day inspired cake. Kim piped most of the hearts because she had a much steadier hand than I. Guess I need to cut-back on my daily lunchtime Americano habit. I got to focus on the chocolate shaving work, which I enjoyed quite a bit.

These are a couple of the other cakes decorated by other fellow bloggers.

I personally found this experience a lot of fun. And thought it would be very cool activity for kids birthdays especially, where the birthday boy or girl would get to decorate their own cake with their friends. What do you think?

I’m not quite sure I understood this right. You buy an already frosted (and optionally bordered) cake, and then add the ‘personal’ decorations yourself?
I think that is a great idea, as you say for a kid’s birthday party, or for any other event.:)
That’s exactly right!
Absolutely gorgeous!
What a fantastic idea!! Who WOULDN’T like this? Y’all are master artists.
What a neat concept…looks like a ton of fun.
The cakes look lovely.
Sounds like you were among some pretty heavy hitters, Josie! What a great experience. You cake is beautiful. Little girls love to bake, etc. Did you have an Easy Bake Oven? I did. Decorating a cake would be a fun activity!
It just so happens I did… got one for Christmas when I was about 5. By the way we saved you some cake.
Hi, partner!
I think we made a BEAUTIFUL cake!!
Great seeing you at the event. I think Rachel’s idea is a great one (if for no other reason, the concept is mutually exclusive to working with bridezillas) and look forward to seeing the concept grow.
Have a great weekend, and hope to see you again soon.

Beautiful cakes!
This is brillant!
Hi Josie – Incredible job on both the writing and the photography! Thanks so much for summing up the evening so well. Keep in touch!
Very elegant cake. You don’t even need black and withe photographs, it’s already black and white.
I’m so jealous! I wish I had been there! That’s awesome!! LOVE the huge chocolate shavings on top!!
